Sun Bear
Helarctos malayanus
The sun bear is the smallest bear species in the world and is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It is easily recognized by the pale, crescent-shaped marking on its chest. Sun bears are powerful climbers and use their long tongues to extract insects and honey, earning them the nickname “honey bear.” They play an important ecological role by dispersing seeds and controlling insect populations.
Sun bears are threatened primarily by deforestation and illegal hunting. They are heavily targeted for the bear bile trade and for traditional medicine. Many cubs are captured for the exotic pet trade after their mothers are killed. With slow reproduction rates and shrinking forest habitat, wild populations continue to decline.
