With less than 500 left in the wild, the Saimaa Ringed Seal (Pusa saimensis) is found only in Lake Saimaa, Finland after which it is named. They are endangered due to habitat loss caused by hydropower projects and climate change. Conservation efforts aim to protect their breeding sites and reduce disturbances. As a unique subspecies adapted to freshwater environments, these seal are crucial to the balance of the Saimaa Lake ecosystem.
