The Vaquita (Phocoena sinus), is the world's smallest and most endangered cetacean, with fewer than 10 individuals estimated to survive. Endemic to the Gulf of California, Mexico, this shy porpoise faces imminent extinction primarily due to bycatch in illegal gillnets used for fishing the endangered totoaba fish. We recognize the critical role of the Vaquita in marine ecosystems and advocates for immediate action to eliminate illegal fishing practices, enforce fishing regulations, and establish protected areas to save this species from extinction.
