The North African Ostrich (Struthio camelus camelus) is a subspecies of the ostrich that was once found across North Africa, including parts of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. However, due to overhunting, habitat loss, and human encroachment, the wild population of this subspecies has been severely reduced. In fact, the North African ostrich is considered extinct in the wild, with only small, managed populations surviving in captivity and as part of reintroduction programs.

The North African ostrich is a large, flightless bird that adapted to desert and semi-arid environments. Unlike other ostrich subspecies, it was known for its ability to withstand the harsh conditions of the Sahara Desert and surrounding regions. Unfortunately, extensive hunting for its feathers, meat, and skin during the 19th and 20th centuries, combined with habitat destruction from agricultural development, caused its numbers to decline drastically.

Conservation efforts for the North African ostrich have focused on reintroducing captive populations to protected areas in its historical range. While the future of the North African ostrich remains uncertain, ongoing conservation initiatives aim to stabilize and restore its populations. Reintroducing the species and ensuring its habitat is protected will be crucial steps in potentially saving the North African ostrich from extinction.
