The Hippopotamus (or hippo), (Hippopotamus amphibius) is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its somewhat placid appearance, the hippo is considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa due to its aggressive nature, especially when it feels threatened. Hippos spend much of their time in rivers, lakes, and wetlands to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun, and they are known for their remarkable ability to run surprisingly fast on land.
There are two species of hippos: the common hippopotamus and the pygmy hippopotamus. The common hippopotamus is much larger, with an estimated population of around 115,000 individuals across sub-Saharan Africa. Although their numbers are still relatively high, hippos are facing significant threats from habitat loss, poaching for their meat and ivory-like tusks, and conflicts with humans, especially as agricultural and human settlements expand near their habitats. Additionally, the spread of disease, such as the human-driven spread of African swine fever, has further impacted their populations.
