Grevy’s Zebra, (Equus grevyi), the largest of all zebra species, is classified as endangered, with fewer than 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild. These zebras are found primarily in northern Kenya, with a small population in Ethiopia. They are distinguishable by their narrow stripes, which are closer together compared to other zebra species, and their larger size and ears. Grevy’s zebras are critically threatened by habitat loss, competition with livestock for food and water, and human-wildlife conflict. As human populations grow and pastoral land is expanded, the Grevy’s zebra faces increasing pressure for resources, making it difficult to find enough space to roam and graze.
Additionally, climate change has exacerbated water shortages, further straining the already limited resources available to these zebras. While they do not face the same level of direct hunting pressure as other species, they are sometimes caught in snares set for other wildlife, and their population numbers continue to decline due to fragmentation of their habitats.
