The Sumatran orangutan is one of humanity’s closest living relatives, sharing approximately 97% of our DNA. Found only on the island of Sumatra, these highly intelligent apes live almost entirely in trees and play a crucial role in seed dispersal across tropical forests.

They are critically endangered due to palm oil plantations, illegal logging, and forest fires. With slow reproduction rates—females give birth only once every 7–9 years—population recovery is extremely difficult. Fewer than 14,000 individuals remain in the wild.
