The Malayan flying fox is one of the largest bat species in the world, with a wingspan that can exceed five feet. Native to Southeast Asia, these fruit bats are essential pollinators and seed dispersers, supporting rainforest regeneration over vast distances. Entire forest ecosystems rely on their nightly feeding flights.

Flying fox populations have suffered catastrophic declines due to mass culling, habitat loss, and hunting for bushmeat. They are often persecuted due to misinformation and fear, despite posing no threat to humans. Loss of roosting sites and large-scale deforestation continue to drive population crashes.
