Binturong (Bearcat)

Arctictis binturong

The binturong, often called the bearcat, is a large, tree-dwelling mammal native to the dense forests of Southeast Asia. Despite its name, it is neither a bear nor a cat, but a member of the civet family. Binturongs are highly arboreal and possess a rare prehensile tail, which they use as a fifth limb to grip branches. One of their most fascinating traits is their role as keystone seed dispersers particularly for fig trees, which support hundreds of other forest species.

Binturong populations are declining rapidly due to widespread deforestation caused by logging, palm oil plantations, and agricultural expansion. They are also hunted for the illegal wildlife trade, both as exotic pets and for use in traditional medicine. Because they reproduce slowly and rely on intact forest canopies, habitat fragmentation has been especially devastating.
