Strigops habroptilus
The kākāpō is a critically endangered flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand and the world's heaviest parrot, weighing up to 4 kg. It is nocturnal, with moss-green plumage and an owl-like face, and is one of the few parrots to use a lek mating system, where males gather in traditional spots to call and display for females. Kākāpō once ranged across New Zealand's forests, where they fed on native fruits, seeds, bark, and roots.
Kākāpō were driven to the brink of extinction by introduced mammals — particularly rats, cats, stoats, and dogs — against which their camouflaged plumage and nocturnal habits are an ineffective protection. They are further hindered by infrequent breeding tied to mast seasons, low fertility, and severe inbreeding from a historic population bottleneck. Today, every surviving individual lives on predator-free offshore islands under intensive conservation management
