Javan Rhinoceros
Rhinoceros sondaicus
The Javan rhino is the rarest of the world's five remaining rhino species, surviving only in Indonesia's Ujung Kulon National Park on the western tip of Java. It has a single small horn (carried only by males), dusky grey skin with armor-like folds, and feeds on shoots, twigs, young foliage, and fallen fruit using its prehensile upper lip. Once ranging across South and Southeast Asia, it now persists as a megaherbivore in one of Java's last tracts of lowland tropical forest.
Javan rhinos have been driven to near extinction by relentless poaching for their horns, which are highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine. Between 2019 to 2023, poachers killed at least 26 rhinos in Ujung Kulon, erasing years of recovery. The remaining population also faces disease transmission from buffalo, the invasive Arenga palm crowding out food plants, and the ever-present risk of tsunamis or eruption from nearby Anak Krakatau.
