The Epaulette Shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) is a small, resilient species native to the shallow coral reefs of Australia and Papua New Guinea. Famous for “walking” with its fins and surviving in low-oxygen environments, this shark thrives in tide pools and reef flats. It is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, but faces increasing threats from coral reef destruction, climate change, and pollution. Despite its adaptability, the long-term survival of the Epaulette Shark is closely tied to the health of coral reef ecosystems.
