Dhole

Cuon alpinus

The dhole is the only social, forest-dwelling canid found in closed forests across its range in South and Southeast Asia, also known as the Asiatic wild dog or "whistling dog." Dholes communicate through a distinctive whistle that carries farther and is easier to hear through thick forest foliage, used to coordinate pack movements during hunts and reassemble scattered group members. As apex predators, they play a critical ecological role by regulating ungulate populations and shaping the structure of Asian forest ecosystems.

Dholes are threatened primarily by habitat loss, prey depletion, and persecution. Forests across their range are being cleared for logging, palm and rubber plantations, agriculture expansion, and major infrastructure projects, while the ungulates they depend on are declining due to overhunting. They are often killed in retaliation for livestock predation and remain at serious risk from habitat loss, prey depletion, disease transmission from domestic dog, human persecution and interspecific competition. With an estimated 82% of its original range already lost and fewer than 2,500 mature individuals remaining, populations are now small, fragmented, and continuing to decline.
