The Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the world’s second-largest fish, known for filter-feeding on plankton with its enormous, open mouth. These gentle giants can be found in cool temperate waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Despite their size, they are harmless to humans and move slowly through coastal waters. The IUCN currently lists the Basking Shark as Endangered, mainly due to historical overfishing, bycatch, and slow reproductive rates. Although international protections are improving, their populations have yet to fully recover, and they remain at risk from vessel strikes, entanglement, and climate-related shifts in plankton availability.
